Malawi government has lifted the suspension of SIM card registration exercise, meaning now the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) can recommence the exercise.
Govt suspended the exercise last month due to lack of enough civic education following public concerns. Initially, the registration exercise was supposed to come to an end on March 31st, 2018.
The Minister of Information and Communication Technology Nicholas Dausi told Parliament on Thursday that MACRA and his Ministry are satisfied that appropriate measures have been taken to address the concerns from the public.
Despite the suspension, mobile phone service providers TNM and Airtel Malawi were still conducting the registration exercise in their respective offices.
Meanwhile, Dausi has urged mobile phone service providers to recruit more agents and buy handsets for them to facilitate easy registration in the rural areas.
