Tobacco Sales On good Start, Mutharika Calls For Better Policies

The 2018 tobacco markets have commenced on good start with President Peter Mutharika calling for better policies to regulate the industry.

This year, production of the leaf has reduced by 14 percent in a season the market is looking to buy at least 170 million kilos.

President Mutharika who also officially opened an office complex of the Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) after opening the Lilongwe Auction Floors, said local farmers are losing out the country’s green gold due to lack of better policies to regulate the industry.

This is also the platform the president has previously used to address other issues.

Chinkhoma Auction Floors in Kasungu opens tomorrow, while Limbe Auction Floors in Blantyre opens on April 16.

The Mzuzu Auction Floors opens on April 23.
