Airtel Malawi Faces Backlash After Announcing New Tariffs Effective 20 November 2025
Airtel Malawi has announced an upward adjustment of its data, voice, and SMS tariffs, with the revised prices scheduled to take effect on 20 November 2025. The update was issued in a public notice dated 17 November 2025 and includes changes across several bundle categories, including PaNet MoFaya, Chezani MpakaMpaka, ChezaFaya, and Timasuke SMS bundles.
The company said the adjustment follows rising operational costs and the need to sustain quality service delivery. Some bundles have been modified not only in price but also in volume. For instance, the Chezafaya Monthly Bundle, previously priced at K40,000 and offering 85GB of data alongside call minutes and SMS allowances, will now cost K50,000 and provide 100GB of data.
However, the announcement has been met with widespread backlash and disappointment from customers on social media. Many consumers expressed frustration over the price increases at a time when the cost of living is already high. One customer questioned why the company has opted to raise prices instead of addressing ongoing network challenges, describing the timing of the move as “insensitive.”
Despite the criticism, #AirtelMalawi says the revised tariffs are necessary for the sustainability of its network operations and continued investment in service improvements. The company has urged subscribers to familiarise themselves with the changes before they take effect on Friday.
