Chikwawa and Nsanje districts have been hit by floods, a disaster that may affect this year’s cotton output.
Speaking to The Nation, the President of the Cotton Farmers Association, Dickson Gundani outlined that six extension planning areas have been affected by the floods, with the association calling on the Cotton Council of Malawi to intervene by providing cotton seeds for the affected farmers.
In the 2019/20 season, the Treasury injected K1 billion to boost the sector, resulting in output increasing to 25 000MT. The output for this year is likely to dwindle, should the necessary stakeholders not be able to intervene.
In similar news, the tobacco industry has expressed fear that the country may not be able to produce enough to meet the demand in the 2021-22 season due to the delayed and sporadic rainfall pattern being experienced.
